“How to Stay Motivated During a Job Search

We all know how exhausting the  job search can be.  It’s easy to get stuck in the cycle of applying to jobs online and then repeatedly checking your email  as you await a response.  For many, it’s hard to decipher which is worse: dealing with the radio silence or the rejection email. But, something WILL come your way and when the opportunity presents itself, you want to be as prepared as possible for when you do get called into that dream job interview. Here are 6 tips to keep the momentum going during your search.

  1. Schedule out your day: Prioritize your daily calendar as if you were employed.  It’s unrealistic to think you can sit behind a computer for 8 hours a day, 5 days a week looking for a new job. And, might I add, BORING. Determine the time of day that you are most productive and dedicate that block of time to your search.  Setting aside 3-4 hours a day to focus on your search will allow you to freely enjoy your leisure time.
  2. Change Locations: Rotate where you work one or two days per week. Visit the local library and utilize the many resources available there.  Go to a local coffee shop or shared office space for a change of scenery.
  3. Set goals and “to do’s” that are realistic:  A general task of “ networking” can be overwhelming, but if you rework your to-do list into more specific tasks – it’s suddenly more manageable.   For instance: Reach out to 2 direct contacts via phone daily, send 3 emails daily and add 5 new LinkedIn connections a week.  Add in an informational coffee every 2 weeks and suddenly networking doesn’t seem so hard.  Which leads to…
  4. Attend professional networking events: I know it might seem counter intuitive to include networking as a motivational tool but getting dressed and out of the house is a morale boost. Sitting around your house in your pj’s all day might be nice for a little while, but having something to look forward to will get you back into your element. Find associations that relate to your profession or the industry you are targeting and join an upcoming meeting. You never know who you will meet and what you will learn.
  5. Create a “Brag Sheet”: There are always days when we question our value and it is a confidence boost when we can remind ourselves what we do well.
    1. What accomplishments are you most proud of?
    2. What is one way you exceeded expectations at your last job?
    3. Have you received a compliment verbally or via email? Write that down.
    4. What qualities have other people said they admire about you?
  6. Take care of yourself: Maybe one of the most important things to remember during a job search! Many people feel compelled to hit the ground running and not look up during a job transition. You will burn out if you don’t take time for yourself. Give yourself permission to schedule breaks and activities that rejuvenate your spirit:
    1. Spend time with family and friends
    2. Get outside – go for a walk or a hike
    3. Exercise and eat healthy
    4. Listen to a motivational video or Ted Talk
    5. Volunteer

Try and remember that this is a temporary time and you will get a job.  Focus on what you can control and try some of the tips above to rejuvenate your motivation and confidence!
