Top Job Search Tips for the New Year

Whether you are embarking on your new year’s resolution to find a new job or continuing the job search you started before the holidays, it’s time to take stock and be sure you’re maximizing your efforts.

Here are my top 3 tips for the job search:

  1. Know what you’re looking for.

It’s difficult to enlist the help of your network or even know how to focus your own efforts if you haven’t taken the time to identify for yourself what is driving your search in these three important areas – skills/strengths, interests/passions, and values/priorities.

Whether you seek out the help of a career coach or do some solid soul-searching on your own, work toward being able to articulate what you are looking for to your network and to potential employers, and to be able to justify why those positions are a good match.

  1. Get offline.

If you’re spending most (or all) of your job search time on job search sites such as a careerbuilder.com and indeed.com, then you’re missing out on a significant portion of the job market.  You’re being reactive to what becomes available rather than being proactive to position yourself to be in the right place at the right time.  Turn it around.  Be intentional.  Research organizations of interest.  Check your network for any potential contacts who can introduce you to someone in your organization of interest.  Employ effective networking strategy and tactics to take ownership of your search.

However, one place that you should be constantly checking on a daily basis is LinkedIn.  If you’re not already on LinkedIn and using it consistently, I think you’ve found your job search objective for the month of February!  LinkedIn’s own tutorials are a great place to learn more on the job search and helpful tactics to land a job at an organization of your choice.

  1. Brush up on your interviewing skills.

Employers expect savvy candidates who have done their homework.  That means researching the company and the job, and being able to discuss your strengths and concrete experience related to both.  Read up on competency or behavior based interviewing and practice, practice, practice.  Be prepared with examples of how you’ve demonstrated the most important skills for the job.  Know how you have demonstrated key characteristics and strengths that are important for the company’s culture.  Your ultimate goal is to demonstrate how you are a perfect match for the organization and the job.

With these few tips we hope you’ll increase your chances of finding that new position in 2018.  For more job search tips, visit our blog at innovateicc.com.
