Talent managers from more than 1,000 organizations in 25 countries representing 16 major industry groups participated in our annual global survey on the future of work, and the results are in. Globally, the top three people strategies reported as being the best solutions to talent management challenges that plague most organizations are:

  • Training
  • Development
  • Coaching

THE TOP PEOPLE STRATEGIES

Well-executed and expertly designed leadership development programs, especially for meeting the needs of geographically dispersed employee populations, are the leading method for closing skills gaps.

  • 37% of respondents are using internally developed leadership development programs and
  • 28% are looking to external partners for supporting development efforts.

Coaching continues to be an effective way to develop employees who are ready to positively impact business results, based on the number of coaching activities that make the list of most powerful people strategies:

  • Training managers to become better coaches
  • One-on-one coaching with external coaches
  • Coaching programs for high-potential employees and leaders

THE TOP SKILLS NEEDED

Again, these development activities – leadership development programs and coaching for individuals and teams – are regarded as the best solutions to the people challenges organizations are facing. Survey respondents also pinpointed the top six skill gaps needing to be closed with these development methods, empowering organizations to achieve better bottom-line results.

The top six skills globally recognized as critical to business success have shifted in the last few years. In 2020, organizations need to see employees who excel in:

  1. Collaboration
  2. Embracing change
  3. Leadership agility
