Executive Coaching Trends for 2019

Honest and direct feedback helps leaders take their skills – and performance – to the next level. One way to deliver this feedback is in a trusted executive coaching relationship. When you engage in a coaching partnership, you can expect a fresh perspective on professional challenges, enhanced thinking and decision making skills, improved interpersonal effectiveness and increased confidence in carrying out work. The main objective is to learn and reflect, and in some cases unlearn leadership skills that lead or inhibit success.

Executive coaching has become more widespread as a training development tool in the professional business space. In the past five years, ICC has seen a spike in senior leaders receiving and requesting support from an executive coach. And, as with any industry, executive coaching and how it is delivered is consistently changing and evolving. In 2019, here are four ways in which executive coaching may begin to take a new shape.

  1. Technology, Technology, Technology. As with any other aspect of our lives, technology will influence executive coaching. Specifically, it is imperative that coaches connect with leaders within various platforms and meet their clients anywhere, anytime regardless of physical location.
  2. Regulation and Standards. Because of the widespread onset of this development tool, there are also many professionals looking to exit the corporate world and build a business as a coach. Well, buyer beware! The coaching industry is not currently regulated which means anyone can call themselves a coach – I mean anyone. Our industry will, in the future, require regulation or will need to standardize training and credentials to protect the field of study and buyers. In the interim, I would recommend if you are a buyer of coaching that you do research on someone’s credentials. For example, to be an ICC coach, you must be highly trained and certified with a credible coaching institution.
  3. Measurable Results. What will set coaches apart in the coming year is their ability to demonstrate measurable results. Savvy clients will request and only choose to partner with firms who can clearly demonstrate how their coaching moved the behavioral needle. Ways to accomplish this include pre and post assessments and other structured feedback.
  4. Coaching for everyone! Due to the expense, coaching is typically reserved for executive level leaders, but coaching will become an important tool for everyone’s development regardless of level. To reduce costs, coaching may be integrated into leadership development programs, or group coaching may be available, but regardless of how it is implemented, coaching will become more commonly used among all professionals.

Thank you for this amazing post. I’m interested in how technology can make our coaching work better. However, I have a question. Do you have information about how AI can actually impact coaching?
